DeepL Desktop App: A little helper that makes translation more natural

If you often need to read foreign materials or communicate with friends abroad, you are definitely familiar with translation software. Copy a piece of text, switch to the browser, paste it into a translation website, and then copy the result... haven't you become a bit tired of this process?

To be honest, I used to do it this way too. Until I discovered the "Quick Translation" feature in the DeepL desktop application, which completely changed the way I use translation tools.

What is it?#

Imagine this: you are reading an English PDF, maybe a paper? Or perhaps an assignment... and you come across a sentence you don't understand. Usually, you would have to go through a lot of hassle, like switching to the browser... but now you just need to:

  1. Select that text
  2. Unlike before, quickly press “Ctrl+C” twice (on Mac, it's two presses of “Cmd+C”)

Then, a magically refined translation window will immediately appear next to your mouse, displaying an accurate and natural translation result.

In this process, you no longer need to:

Switch to...

  • Leave the software you are using (PDF, Word, web page, chat page... anywhere!)
  • Manually open DeepL or any other translation tool
  • Perform tedious copy, switch, and paste actions

It’s like having a professional translation assistant quietly waiting in the background; as soon as you signal with a shortcut, it will appear instantly, complete the task, and then quietly disappear. It perfectly integrates into your workflow instead of forcing you to accommodate it.

Why use it?#

Why is this feature an "efficiency miracle"?

  • True "seamless integration": Your thought process will no longer be interrupted by frequent window switching. Reading, translating, understanding, the entire process flows smoothly. This is crucial for us business elites who need to focus intensely on writing or research.
  • Convenience: Pressing the shortcut twice is almost a subconscious action, and the translation result appears almost instantly. It reduces what could be a 10-second operation to under 1 second.
  • Focus on the present: Your eyes can always stay on the interface you are reading or writing on, keeping the context in your mind intact.

The translation quality of DeepL is already excellent, much more natural than many tools that feel heavily "machine-translated." But what truly makes it indispensable for me is this quick translation feature that combines high-quality translation with extreme convenience.

Where to find it?#

It's right there in the navigation bar on their official website; only a fool wouldn't be able to find it.

Other things#

  • The shortcut can be changed! If you're worried that double pressing rap + C + C conflicts with other shortcuts, you can set it to something else, like alt + T (personal preference, it doesn't have to be double pressing).
  • It not only translates but also can “polish”: called Deepl Write, AI Powered, you know, can't fall behind the times.
  • It also supports file translation, translating an entire PDF is great! (with some limitations, haha)
  • Discover other features on your own...

Ramblings#

If you are fed up with the inefficient translation process of switching back and forth between applications, then the Quick Translation feature of the DeepL desktop version is definitely worth spending a few minutes to install and experience.

It's not some flashy new feature, but a productivity tool that can genuinely save you time and enhance your focus. Honestly, since I started using it, I haven't opened the translation tab in my browser again.

Give it a try; I hope you can also feel this "translation as natural as breathing" smoothness.
